Key findings
The Committee reiterates its concern that Germany has not sufficiently addressed structural racism affecting ethnic Muslim communities. It notes the general suspicion directed at Muslims by public authorities, which contributes to the spread of prejudice and negative stereotypes. In this context, the Committee expresses concern over the bans on peaceful demonstrations commemorating the Nakbah, as well as more recent demonstrations in support of Palestinians in Gaza. It also notes reports from ethnic Muslim communities describing a chilling effect on their freedom of expression regarding the situation in Palestine. Additionally, the Committee highlights its concern about the intersectional discrimination faced by women from ethnic Muslim backgrounds, who experience overlapping disadvantages based on ethnicity, gender, and religion., hindering their access to education and employment. The Committee is also alarmed by the disproportionately negative impact of the May 2021 amendment to the Federal Civil Service Act, as well as other so-called “neutrality laws,” which may restrict job opportunities for women wearing headscarves.
